A myofascial view of the temporomandibular joint (and beyond) with Dr. Peter Schwind

Aeroparc Gilze-Rijen Koffie/thee, lunch & syllabus Engels

This course focuses on the main dysfunctions of the TMJ. At first we will study the “macrostructural” strain patterns, the three dimensional connections between the shoulder, the neck the cranium and the TMJ.

This will include visual and palpative evaluation  of

– the fascial tone of the muscles that connect from the TMJ in cranial and distal direction

– the ligaments that are related to these muscles

After we will follow up with a detailed anatomical analysis of the “microstructure” of the TMJ. We will pay attention

– to the three functional units of the disk inside the joint capsule

– to the hydrostatic pressure inside the bilaminar zone posterior to the disk

– to the force transmission between the ear and the TMJ

– to the function and dysfunction of the two heads of the pterygoids.

The teaching  will discuss some theoretical  aspects, especially the role of force interaction between neurocranium und viscerocranium. This discussion will include evaluation of paleoanthropological data of the evolution of the human cranium. And it will also include latest scientific findings about the role of force transmission between the maxilla and the brain and its possible role for the development of brain dysfunction.

Nevertheless the learning objectives will not be

theoretical, they will be about manual practice for

  • the treatment of the lack of anterotrusion during movement of the mandible
  • the treatment of dysfunctional laterotrusion during opening and closing the mouth
  • the treatment of hypotension and hypertension around the TMJ
  • the treatment of the biomechanical parts of bruxism and its psychological implications
  • the treatment of joint clicks
  • the treatment of specific strain present in the gingiva of single teeth.
  • the treatment of mechanical trauma around the TMJ, especially whiplash.

Peter Schwind is one of the  European pioneers of work with fascia. He looks back to more than 40 years of manual practice at his office in Munich. He has taught his concepts and genuine techniques for osteopaths, physical therapists and doctors of manual medicine worldwide.  His book FASCIAL  AND MEMBRANTECHNIQUE is available in several languages. The fourth, revised  German edition was published recently with the title PRAXISHANDBUCH FASZIENBEHANDLUNG (Elsevier).

One of his special interests is the manual treatment of TMJ dysfunctions and the complementary support before and after dental implants.

Peter has cooperated for many years with the president of the German Association of Dental Implantology and Oral Surgery, Dr. med. dent. Sebastian Schmidinger.

Peter´s myofascial view of the temporomandibular joint is based on a long term dialogue  with Dr. Schmidinger.

One of Peter´s  popular books about FASCIA will be published in Dutch language this year.
