About the course

This course is designed for qualified osteopaths that seek to expand their knowledge in the paediatric field, including newly qualified osteopaths who have limited or no experience of treating children as well as osteopaths with more paediatric experience who may want to refresh and broaden their learning in this field.

Although the content will be based on the paediatric population and how their anatomy and physiology make them particularly vulnerable to problems linked to this structural disorder, the content will also be relevant and transferable to treatment of adult patients.

The course format will be mainly theory presentations, with a small amount of group work and presentation of relevant techniques.

Course content includes the embryology and anatomy of the tongue and frenulum. The possible causes of ankyloglossia and prevalence. The effect of ankyloglossia on tongue function, suckling and the long-term development of structures related to the tongue. The different classifications systems in ankyloglossia. Examination, signs, symptoms and differential diagnosis of ankyloglossia. Interdisciplinary collaboration when treating patients with tongue tie. The different types of frenotomy. The osteopathic evaluation of structures in the body affected by ankyloglossia. The osteopathic treatment pre-& post frenotomy and if the infant doesn’t undergo revision. There is a strong grounding in anatomy and the available research. Particular attention will be given to how the osteopathic approach can have an influence of the wellbeing of the tongue tied infant.
