Head Trauma and Mental Health with Jo Wildy DO BSc

Aeroparc Gilze-Rijen Koffie/thee, lunch & syllabus English

Jo Wildy DO BSc will present a 3 day course on her book MIND AND MEMBRAIN, Head Trauma and Mental Health – a new approach to diagnosis and treatment.

The course revolves around the osteopathic understanding and osteopathic treatment of mood disorders and the preservation of brain health.  Jo describes an unrecognised contributory factor to both of the above that is simply absent from global consciousness – namely the disturbance of the physical housing of the brain.  She calls this Membrain Disorder. In the course she explains Membrain Disorder, why and how it happens, how to diagnose and treat it and restore Membrain Health.

The world is awash with scientists researching into mood disorders and early onset brain disease, yet all eyes are focused on the brain itself.   The living skull, underlying membrane system and the irrigation of the cranial cavity is all but ignored. This is the territory of the osteopath trained in the cranial field.  We own a skill set that is woefully undervalued in the field of mental health because we do not explain how we can help. We do not have the narrative – until now.

Part two puts Membrain Disorder into context by describing The Dimensional Model of Health and Disease.  This is based around the science of biological complexity.  As a profession we exist in a hostile world of allopathic righteousness that is proving more and more challenging. As a profession we lack a modern day, scientific and rational explanation of ‘osteopathy in its intended format’ and a language accessible to all – but the Dimensional Model of Health goes some way towards both.

Course Outcomes:

  • A knowledge of the history of mental health diagnosis and treatment – both allopathic and osteopathic.
  • A better understanding of mental health problems and their diagnosis around the Dimensional Model of Health and Disease.
  • To understand the concept of Membrain Health and how this has an effect on the behaviour and long-term health of the brain.
  • To understand how the concept of Membrain Disorder fits into the Dimensional Model of Health
  • To understand when a patient is suffering with Membrain Disorder and to successfully treat that patient.

IMPORTANTLY

  • To understand when a patient is not suffering with Membrain Disorder but be able to recognise at what biological dimension they may be suffering and advise/refer accordingly.
  • Develop a new language to describe ‘osteopathy in its intended format’ to use in discussions with one another, with other health professionals and scientists and with their patients.
  • In this course and in her book Jo focuses on mental health but this model is equally applicable to physical health.

Joanna Wildy left a career in Genetic research to join the British School of Osteopathy in 1984.  She has been a practising osteopathy for 40 years.  Alongside her practise she has taught in the clinic and technique department at the BSO 1991- 2001, was a final clinical competence examiner for the General Osteopathic Council and was external examiner at the London School of Osteopathy overseeing the osteopathic content of the masters course.

In 2004 – 2014 Jo Wildy joined the faculty of the Vienna School of Osteopathy teaching physiotherapists and medical doctors ‘osteopathy in the cranial field’ over a 6-year part time MSc course.  So impressed by the curriculum that was taught in Northern Europe that in 2011-2013 she wrote and published 3 major essays trying to influence the future of UK undergraduate programme.  She was keen to see more cranial and visceral teaching in the undergraduate programme and more focus on osteopathic principles of health.  These articles have recently been republished on LinkedIn.

In 2014 Jo left her teaching to join a study group in Belgium called Evolutionary Osteopaths.  Over the next 6 years she explored the field of biological complexity through the study of evolution and embryology.  The chronological development of the human form, how hierarchal systems self-organise and self-maintain, offered a new understanding of health and disease.  It provided a scientific explanation and a modern day language for osteopathy in its intended format – something that the osteopathic profession has been lacking.

Bringing together Jo’s science background, nearly 4 decades in practice with a very special interest in treating patients with mental health problems and her years of studying biological complexity she has published Mind & Membrain: Head Trauma and Mental Health – a New Approach to Diagnosis and Treatment Troubador Publishing Nov ’22.  Jo has been giving lectures and talks since the publication of her book.   Her aim is for the next generation of osteopaths to take this work forwards.

Since publishing her book Jo Wildy has talked at the iO conference Oct 2023, she presented to the UK SCC faculty members and has also delivered  short introductory courses in the UK and Canada.     She has been developing a Post Graduate training course specialising in the treatment of what she calls Membrain Disorder (part one of her book), a face to face training course which starts this year and she is visiting Germany, Holland and Japan as well as teaching in the UK.  There is an online course for the Dimensional Model of Health (part two of her book) hosted by the DOOC in Germany.
