About Viola Freyman:
Viola M. Frymann (1921–2016) was an influential American osteopath, renowned for her pioneering work in pediatric osteopathy and cranial osteopathic therapy.
Originally born in England, she later moved to the United States, where she completed her osteopathic training. Frymann was a direct student of William G. Sutherland, the founder of cranial osteopathy, and carried his teachings forward through her clinical practice and education.
In 1982, she founded the Osteopathic Center for Children in San Diego, dedicating her work to treating newborns, children, and mothers. Her approach emphasized the importance of early osteopathic intervention in infants, especially following difficult or traumatic births. In a landmark study of 1,250 newborns, she found that only 145 showed no signs of functional disturbances—highlighting the potential need for early treatment.
Dr. Frymann was also a passionate educator, teaching at osteopathic institutions around the world. She received numerous honors for her contributions to osteopathy, including the Andrew Taylor Still Medallion of Honor and the William G. Sutherland Award. Her legacy continues through the many osteopaths she trained and the lasting influence of her work in pediatric osteopathy.
